Can You Get Better at Judo By Watching?
Watching elite judoka isn’t just about enjoying the throws, the ippons and the big moments. When you start studying how the world’s best athletes actually move, grip, attack and transition, you begin to see judo differently.
You might watch the same match you’ve watched before, but suddenly notice something new: how a judoka creates a reaction before attacking, where they place their grips, how they move their opponent’s weight, or how quickly they transition from one technique to the next.
Watch Beyond the Throw
A great throw is rarely just one movement.
Watch an elite judoka closely and you’ll see a sequence of decisions happening before the technique ever lands. The grip is established. The opponent reacts. The feet move. The balance changes. A combination develops. Then, when the opportunity appears, the attack happens.
Studying these details can help you understand why a technique works, rather than simply knowing how to perform it.
You start to recognise patterns in gripping, movement, combinations and transitions and those patterns can influence the way you approach your own judo.
Learn to See the Game Differently
The more high-level judo you study, the more you can develop your own judo awareness.
You begin asking different questions:
- Why did they attack at that moment?
- What reaction were they looking for?
- How did they create the opening?
- What happened when the first attack didn't work?
- How did they move from one technique to another?
- What made their grip so effective?
This is where watching judo becomes more than simply watching judo.
It can change your mindset.
Instead of seeing a throw as an isolated technique, you begin to see the movement, timing, grip fighting and reactions that created the opportunity in the first place.
That is one of the reasons we created Fighting Films Plus.
With 2,500+ videos featuring world-class judoka, champions and experienced coaches, FF+ gives you the opportunity to study judo from some of the people who have competed and coached at the highest levels of the sport.
